I have sung praise to DDL on many occasions, but I gotta give this one to Jackie Earle Haley's death stare. So much malice in just a look. The way he is lit in this scene too. *chefs kiss*
It would be interesting to know more about what L. calls the " other freedoms previously unknown to us" if the freedom to enslave is rejected. Can someone recommend a book that delves into this?
The Civil War was fought when a little less than half the country decided that if it wasn't winning elections to get its way (and its "way" was the evil domination of other human beings), then quit democracy and turn to violence. Fast forward, it's the same shit, only a different day.
Lincoln,Grant and Sherman were war criminals. They made war against innocent defenseless women and children. The south for all her faults never once bombed, shelled , or bayoneted women amd children but the Yankees did. Do with that what you will
But actually the Confederacy was on their way to emancipating slaves by this point, to induce them to enlist in the Confederate armed forces. Much of the last half of the first chapter of Winik's "April 1865" is dedicated this topic. On a different point, good casting of Jackie Earle Haley as Alexander Stephens, who was quite short
That was a last-ditch effort by the Confederacy. Considered by the Confederate leaders at the end of the Civil War. Yes, there were discussions by the leaders of the Confederacy about this very subject. The Southerners were not honorable men. How did it work out for the black slaves of America when they were promised their freedom when they fought in the wars of 1776 and 1812. During the War of 1812 about 500 slaves were promised by General Jackson that they get their freedom in connection with the Battle of New Orleans. If they fought against the British. These slaves fought valiantly. These slaves were return back to their masters. In the War of 1776, many slaves fought in substitute of their masters for the Colonials. Many other slaves fought for the British and the Colonials for their freedom. in both cases of the British and the Colonials. Many slaves were set free. But many of the slaves were return back to a life of servitude. There is even one case of a slave Robert James who fought in both the war of 1776 and 1812 were he was promised his freedom. He fought in both wars, and he was returned immediately back to a life of slavery after both wars. Abraham Lincoln probably realized that he not only did he have to destroy the South militarily. It was essential he had to destroy the South economically. Which meant the freeing of the slaves. If opportunity presented itself even if the Confederacy armed and convinced the slaves to foolishly fight for the South. At the end of the Civil War. The Southerners of the "Planter's Class" would have immediately returned these black men back to a life of servitude. These Confederates were never honorable men. This is why Black American history has to be taught in our schools. A thought from a black American. You have a nice day.
Go look up picture of Stephens and Seward.... this movie not only nailed Lincoln, but them too, it's almost scary, like they walked right out of the history book.
Nope I don't ever use the term states rights when it comes to the issue of slavery back then. People who defended slavery in the name of states rights are an embarrassment to that movement.
The Constitution was ratified by the States not the people. A Republic not a “democracy.” Each state joined by committing to all men are created equal. That should have been the justification for the war not some erratic thinking of “union.” Self determination is the policy of US foreign policy today. Absent slavery would the States have had the right to leave?
Come Onan Lincoln didn't are about slavery he just used it has a platform to get through the war so let's not canonized him our hero worship him. I believe he was basically a good guy but didn't realize his mistake when he called up troops & volunteers to threatene the south after his election he bluffed & it cost alot of lifes!
My great grandma was related to Stephens.. Lincoln and Stephens were friends in Congress pre war. Lincoln was highly complimentary of Stephens. Interesting what was to follow.. I’m sure there was mutual respect in spite of their political differences.
The hypocrisy to blame him for the deaths of the soldiers when the South was the ones who started the war, and then want back in quickly so that they could block ratification. It takes so serious stones to be that arrogant.
We got here because of people like you. People like you with your nasty attitude towards people who live in a rural areas of the country and who just simply want to keep God in tradition in the country. But no you push those people too far with political correctness and in the name of progressivism. That's how we got people like Donald Trump we may get them again in 2024
Wow Republicans can value democracy because we don't cherish it like you do. Well we do cherish democracy but we're not going to kiss his ass every damn time because sometimes the people can be wrong
Lincoln has gone on to define the American Conservatism and the right in America… he is *truly* the greatest president in American history 🇺🇸 God Bless America 🇺🇸
We went far too easy on the south. They should have been treated as a defeated nation, stripped of senate representation for good at the very least, and placed under permanent federal oversight. Stripping them of statehood completely would have been just as well.
While the pacing could have been much more better and the inaccuracies fixed, I still enjoy this film and Daniel Day Lewis embodied Lincoln, who wanted peace and unity. To those who said he cause the Civil War are not having any reliable sources to prove this claim. I’m pinning the blame on his godawful predecessor who was a flaming doughface and do-nothing traitor, James Buchanan. They clearly know nothing of history and they’re just trolling y’all. Lincoln worked hard in his whole presidency to clean up the mess his lousy and garbage predecessors, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan, have left for him and there’s no doubt he did succeeded in helping this nation by helping to reunite the nation, ban slavery (though not his first intention at first before subverting this in order to help the Union win the war) and end the Civil war.
@ 1:00 Well, yes. Yes, he did. It's not his fault you idiots split the Democratic ticket, thereby guaranteeing a Lincoln victory...As it is, he didn't even need the South to win!
@@lostallmymoney2082its not a divine document. And yes he had the right to suspend habeus corpus. We went far too easy on the south. Who but Lincoln could have saved the Union as he did - with his particular intelligence, wisdom, etc? His life trajectory makes it easy to believe in Providence.
The north declared war on the Confederacy. The Confederacy had every right to secede from the Union. Lincoln went back under force of arms and DICTATED his will to those southern states. The south really is right ... attacked Fort Sumter and now they'll blame the Union for Northern Aggresion. seized Federal forts and installations in their states before they even seceded.
Lincoln was too kind. When Stephens said: "your Union, sir, is bonded in cannon fire and death", Lincoln's response should've been: "And yours was bonded in the inhumane enslavement, torture, subjugation, and exploitation of other sentient human beings which our cannon fire and destruction put an end to AND could've been avoided had you & your union chosen to be less savage."
In my mind's eye, when I see movies about history, I am usually well aware that those films bear little resemblance to what actually happened..
